Knife Storage: Choosing the right storage for your blade is extremely important when it comes to safely keeping your collection of knives. There are several different types of knife storage systems available. Here, we'll go over some of the most common storage systems and which one you should buy. The type of knife you have will greatly determine what type of storage system you buy. Keep in mind that certain blade styles (stainless steel) will be better suited for a certain type of blade.
Magnetic Knife Storage: Magnetic knife storage systems work in a similar fashion to that of a magnetic knife rack. The difference is that instead of using metal shelves or racks, your knives will be held in a magnetic field created by the magnets in the storage unit. This is incredibly safe way to store your knives and much safer than storing them on a shelf or other surface. Many knife storage units are available with magnetic knife holders so they allow your knives to be close at hand.
Double Cabinet Storage: If you have a larger kitchen, you can use two cabinets, one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom. A double cabinet storage system will allow you to store your knives in two separate locations, both out of site of where you would normally store them. This allows you to utilize as much space as you like in your kitchen while still being able to keep your knives safe. To access the knives in the bathroom cabinet, simply pull out a drawer and your knives will be waiting there. This is a great knife storage method for apartments and smaller kitchens.
Knife Block/Slots: Knife blocks or slots are great for extra space. Typically, you'll find two slots per countertop, but this is not always the case. Depending on the layout of your kitchen and the countertop materials used, you may find that you need more than one countertop to store your knives in. Knife block slots keep your knives out of harm's way while still leaving them accessible.
Magnetic Knife Blocks: Knife storage devices can come in just about any material, including magnetic versions. The advantage of a magnetic knife block is that it keeps knives out of harm's way while still leaving them accessible. Magnetic knife blocks can be purchased in most hardware stores and online at just about any website. You'll find a variety of different styles and prices online, so it's really just a matter of looking around to locate the best price for the most knives and slots.
In-drawer Storage: In-drawer storage systems are often overlooked as a great option for longer knives. While you won't find blade locks on an in-drawer storage device, there are some you should consider. One of the best in-drawer storage systems I've seen is the slide in knife block. Slide in knife blocks are extremely popular because they take up absolutely no counter space. You simply place your knives in the drawer and they're out of your way.
Magnetic Strips: Magnetic strips are another excellent option for knife storage. There are two types of magnetic strips that you can purchase: those that attach to your kitchen drawer handles or those that attach to your knife block. Because there is no need for a lock or blade lock when storing knives with a magnetic strip, it is extremely easy to add additional storage to your kitchen knife sets. When you purchase a magnetic strip, you will want to make sure it is strong enough to withstand the constant weight the knives will put on it. While most knife blocks will hold several knives, only the strongest ones will be able to withstand the stress for long periods of time without any problems.
Knife storage ideas for kitchen knives can be a bit confusing. Once you determine the basic items you'll need to store, you can start looking for the best combination of materials. For most kitchen knives, it's all about finding the right combination of strength and price. Knife storage doesn't have to be difficult; you just have to remember to take good care of your valuable possessions.
