Buyer's Guide: Hiking Knives

Hiking Knives For Good Everyday Carry

To purchase the best hiking knives, there are a number of things you should look at. First of all, what do you want it for? If you just want to have it for cutting food, opening cans, and cutting firewood, then a multi-purpose hiking knife will probably be adequate for your purposes. However, if you want to have it for other activities, like skinning your fish, then you'll want something a little more durable. Fortunately, we've spent long enough in the outdoors to know what things we absolutely need a knife for, and this article will discuss some of the best multi-use tools available on the market today.

When you're reviewing hiking knives for purchase, what to look for is the overall quality of the knife. The handle is the part of the knife that the user will hold. Most people prefer a small, lightweight knife that is comfortable to hold, and some people actually prefer a heavier weight but a weaker grip. This, however, isn't a universal feature. A lot of multi-tool makers make very thin, lightweight models, which is why you may find some of these knives with a little too much give or a weak grip.

There are many different styles of multi-tool, and one of the most popular is the single-edged folding knife handle. The reason why they are so popular is that they are very light and easy to carry. A lot of the smaller multi-tools have a sheath that fits inside your backpack, or they can easily be carried in a pocket or clipped onto a belt.

The next consideration is the size of the blade and what type of cutting edge it has. Some multi-tool blades are made with a large, serrated edge. This is what most people think of when they think of a folding knife, but there are also versions with a flat top, a duller blade, and even a jagged bottom. Some are serrated all the way to the end, while others have a distinct smooth finish. The overall length of a fixed blade knife is an important consideration, as well. Some hiking knives are only available in a couple of inches, while others are available in three or four feet.

Another thing to consider is how sharp the cutting edge needs to be. If you're going to be carrying a hiking knife for many hours of hiking, you want a blade that is very sharp. Some hikers prefer using a few sharpened edges, so they can switch them out depending on the conditions. For example, if they start out with a dull knife and need to keep it sharp, simply sharpen it a few times. However, if you're going to be carrying a serrated edge, you might be best off buying some heavy-duty scissors to replace your sharpening stone.

The third thing to consider is the edge's drop-point configuration. Drop-pointed blades are more ergonomically friendly, and they provide a more stable cut. Many survival knives also come with a drop-point edge, but many quality hiking knives offer a different edge shape. Look for a model with a straight edge or a serrated edge, especially if you plan on deep, clean cuts. Most models of folding survival knives come with a flat top or a serrated edge, so make sure to choose one that matches your survival style.

Of course, the biggest and most obvious consideration is how much you're willing to spend. Of course, you can get high-quality survival knives for low prices, but do expect to pay more for them. High-quality survival knives are often made from high-carbon steel with professional craftsmanship. However, budget-minded shoppers should still expect to pay a few hundred dollars for a good folding knife.

One of the best uses for hiking knives is for everyday carry. The thinness of their blades makes them ideal for opening cans or opening bottles. They're also good for opening firepits or finding good snacks on the trail. Even though you may not use it every day, a knife can provide valuable service for a long time.
