How To Choose The Best Spyderco Paysan
Spyderco has been making knives since the early 1980s, and their products have become synonymous with quality. The company was founded by Bill Spangler, who wanted to make a better version of his own pocketknife. He did just that, creating a line of blades that were both affordable and durable. Today, Spyderco continues to produce top-notch tools that are still made in America.
What Is A Spyderco Paysan?
The Spyderco Paysan is an all stainless steel folder made for everyday carry. The blade has been ground into a razor sharp edge and features a drop point style tip up design. It comes with a lanyard hole at the base of the handle for easy attachment to a keychain or belt loop. This model includes a black G10 handle scales and a titanium pocket clip.
Who needs a Spyderco Paysan?
The Spyderco Paysan is one of my favorite folders. I love its classic look, comfortable grip, and overall performance. But, sometimes, I wish it had a bit more utility. For instance, I'd love to use it for cutting rope, but it doesn't have enough teeth to do the job right now.
Fortunately, Spyderco has released a new version of the Paysan called the Paysan 2. With this update, the blade features a slightly larger spine, which makes it perfect for cutting rope. Also, the handle has been redesigned to offer better comfort while holding the folder. Finally, the lockback mechanism has been improved to allow for faster deployment.
I'm excited to see how these changes affect the Paysan 2. I think it's going to become my go-to folder for cutting rope.
The Importance Of Purchasing A Quality Spyderco Paysan
If you've ever owned a Spyderco Paysan folder, then you already know how amazing they are. These knives have become synonymous with great craftsmanship and durability. But just because you can buy a Paysan doesn't mean you should. There are many things to consider when selecting a knife. For example, do you want a blade that's easy to sharpen? Do you prefer a handle that feels natural in your hand? How about a pocket clip that won't snag your pants? What about a sheath that looks nice? All of these factors play a role in determining whether or not a particular knife is worth buying. So let's take a closer look at some of the features that make the Spyderco Paysan so special.
Blade Steel - This is where the rubber meets the road. You'll notice that most blades are made from either CPM S30V stainless steel or VG-10 titanium. Both materials offer excellent edge retention and corrosion resistance. The difference between them lies in their hardness. Stainless steel is harder than titanium. Because of this, stainless steel tends to hold an edge better. Titanium offers superior strength and toughness. When you combine the two together, you end up with a blade that's strong yet flexible.
Handle Material - A handle material like wood, plastic, or aluminum can affect how a knife performs. Wood handles tend to wear down quickly. Plastic handles are durable, but they lack the tactile feedback that you receive from a wooden handle. Aluminum handles are lightweight and very durable. They're perfect if you plan on carrying your knife every day. Regardless of the type of handle you choose, it must be able to withstand everyday use. Just because a knife is expensive doesn't mean it's going to break.
Pocket Clip - Pocket clips come in various sizes and shapes. Generally speaking, larger pockets are easier to carry and less likely to catch on something. Smaller pockets are easier to conceal.
Features To Consider When Buying A Spyderco Paysan
Blade steel. The blade steel used in a Spyderco Paysan is VG10 stainless steel. This type of steel has been used in knives since the 1970s, and it provides excellent edge holding properties. In addition, this steel is corrosion resistant, meaning it doesn't rust easily and stays sharp longer than other steels.
Handle design. The handle of a Spyderco Paysan is made from G-10 laminate wood. G-10 laminate is a composite material composed of layers of hardwood sandwiched between two sheets of glass cloth. This gives the handle a very strong yet lightweight feel.
Stainless steel liners. The liner of a Spyderco Paysan is constructed from 420J2 stainless steel. This type of steel is extremely durable and holds its shape well. It's also highly corrosion resistant.
Locking mechanism. The locking system of a Spyderco Paysan is unique. Unlike most locking mechanisms found on other knives, the lockback mechanism on a Spyderco Paysan allows you to change the angle of the blade while still keeping the blade locked into place. This makes it easier to cut through materials such as leather or canvas.
Overall length. The overall length of a Spyderco Paysan is 7 inches. This means it fits comfortably in your hand and is ideal for everyday carry.

Different Types Of Spyderco Paysan
The Paysan line was introduced by Spyderco in 2010. It features blades that are thin enough to fit into a pocket yet strong enough to cut through bone. Each blade is forged from CPM S35VN steel and finished with a satin finish. The handles are constructed from G10 scales and feature lanyard holes. The Paysan line includes three models; the Paysan, Paysan Slim, and Paysan Elite. All three knives are built to last and are backed by a lifetime warranty.
The Paysan is the entry level model. It weighs 3 ounces and measures 5 inches overall. It is made from 440C stainless steel and is available in black, blue, brown, gray, green, red, silver, and titanium finishes. The Paysan is a good starter knife due to its small size and affordable price tag. It is also a great knife for beginners since it does not include any sharpening stones.
The Paysan Slim is slightly larger than the Paysan. It weighs 4 1/2 ounces and measures 6 inches long. It is made from 420HC stainless steel and is available in black, blue, brown, gray, olive drab, nickel, orange, pink, purple, red, silver, white, yellow, and titanium finishes. The Paysan Slim is a great knife for intermediate users. Its large size makes it comfortable to handle and allows you to use it for tasks that the smaller Paysan cannot perform.
The Paysan Elite is the largest knife in the Paysan lineup. It weighs 7 ounces and measures 8 inches long. It is made from ATS-34 tool steel and is available in black, blue, brown, gray, gold, olive drab, nickel, orange, pink, purple, red, silver, white, yellow, and titanium finishes. The Paysan Elite is a full tang knife that offers excellent performance. It is recommended for experienced users.
