Cold Steel knives have become one of my favorite tools. I love them because they are so versatile and easy to use. They are perfect for camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, and even home defense. When it comes to buying a Cold Steel knife, however, there are many things to take into consideration. For example, how do you know if the knife you want is worth the investment? How do you know if the knife you buy is going to work properly? What about safety? Is the knife sharpened properly? These questions and others like them should be answered before making any purchase. Let's go through some of the most common questions people ask when looking to buy a Cold Steel knife.
This question is very simple. All Cold Steel knives are made of stainless steel. This means that the knife is rust proof and corrosion resistant. Stainless steel is often referred to as "hard" steel. There are other types of steel that are softer and less durable. You may find knives that are made of carbon steel, aluminum, titanium, brass, copper, etc. Each type of steel offers different advantages and disadvantages. Carbon steel is soft and malleable, but tends to wear down quickly. Aluminum is light weight and strong, but is easily scratched. Titanium is extremely lightweight and strong, but is difficult to sharpen.
A thicker blade makes the knife more stable and provides greater control. Thicker blades are also more likely to stay sharp.
Blade length. The longer the blade, the more effective it is against hard objects. However, the longer blades can weigh down the knife. Choose a blade length that feels comfortable in your hand while still being able to cut through tough materials.
Handle material. Some knives feature a stainless steel handle. Others feature a black carbon steel handle. Carbon steel handles tend to hold their edge well over time, but they may rust if exposed to moisture. Stainless steel handles are less prone to corrosion, but they may scratch easily if dropped.
Weight. Knives with heavier blades usually perform better than those with lighter blades. But heavy knives can be difficult to wield. Consider how often you plan to carry the knife and how much weight you'd prefer to carry on your person.
Edge geometry. Most knives feature straight edges. Some knives feature serrated edges. Serrations allow you to slice through food faster and easier. They also prevent the knife from slipping off the cutting board during slicing. Straight edges are generally sharper, but they lack the versatility of serrated edges.
Stainless steel construction. Many knives feature stainless steel construction. This type of steel is durable and strong. However, most knives made of this material are coated with a layer of chromium oxide. Chromium oxide protects the steel from rusting. However, it can dull the sharpness of the blade.
Size. Smaller knives are easier to store and transport. Larger knives are easier to control and maneuver. However, smaller knives can slip out of your hands if you accidentally drop them.
Comfort. Some knives feature ergonomic grips. These grips are shaped to fit comfortably into your hand. Ergonomic grips can improve comfort and accuracy.
Availability. While many stores sell Cold Steel knives, only certain models are available online. Before purchasing, check the availability of the model you want to buy.
Cost. Prices range widely depending on the quality of the knife and its features. High-end knives cost hundreds of dollars.
