He began working for Gerber Knives in 1905 and eventually became president of the company. His designs included the famous Gerber Gator Knife. The Gerber Gator was introduced in 1929 and quickly became a huge success. It was followed up by the Gerber ZT-1 in 1930. The ZT-1 was a smaller version of the original Gator. It featured a drop point blade style design and a reversible pocket clip. The ZT-2 came out in 1932 and was essentially a refinement of the ZT-1.

In 1938, Becker left Gerber and formed his own company called Becker Knives. He continued making the ZT line until 1941 when World War II broke out. During the war, Becker focused on producing tools for the military. He returned to designing knives again in 1946. He released the Boker Folding Hunter in 1948. The Boker Folding Hunter was a complete redesign of the ZT line. It featured a flipper opening mechanism and a drop point blade. The Boker Folding Hunter was a huge hit and remains one of the most popular folders ever made. It was soon followed by the Boker Classic Hunter in 1949.
